The Town Deserves World-Class Care: What It Means to Bring Elite Chiropractic to Downtown Oakland

✍️ Dr. Ben Glass, D.C. 📍 The Shift Chiropractic • Downtown Oakland ⏳ 6 min read

There is a version of high-quality healthcare that exists almost exclusively in certain zip codes. Private practices in neighborhoods where the median household income is high enough that patients can pay out of pocket, where insurance reimbursements make running a premium service financially viable, where the demographic expects and demands a certain level of care and walks out the door if they do not get it.

Oakland is not always that zip code. And it should not matter.

The Shift Chiropractic exists because Dr. Ben Glass and Dr. Irina Velichko made a choice, years ago, to practice in downtown Oakland -- not in spite of the community here, but because of it. Because Oakland has the kind of people who deserve a chiropractor who takes their craft seriously, who speaks their language, who treats the whole person and not just the presenting complaint, and who is invested in this neighborhood for the long term.

Zip code should not determine the quality of your healthcare. That is not a slogan. It is the operating principle behind every clinical decision we make at The Shift.

Oakland's Health Disparity Is Real

The data on health disparities in Oakland is stark and well-documented. Life expectancy in Oakland varies by as much as fifteen years between neighborhoods separated by just a few miles. Communities with lower median incomes, less access to fresh food, more environmental stressors, less access to primary and preventive care, and higher chronic disease burden face measurably worse health outcomes than their higher-income neighbors across town.

Chiropractic care is not going to solve a fifteen-year life expectancy gap by itself. That gap has structural, economic, and environmental roots that run deep. But access to quality musculoskeletal care -- pain management, nervous system support, injury recovery, and preventive maintenance -- is one piece of the picture. And it is a piece that has been unevenly distributed for too long.

What "World-Class" Actually Means in Practice

World-class is not a vibe. It is not marble floors and a receptionist who calls you by name. It is clinical. It is what happens in the room, with the practitioner's hands on your spine, and whether that practitioner has the training, the palpatory intelligence, and the genuine investment in your outcome to give you the best possible version of chiropractic care.

By that definition, world-class is absolutely achievable in a modest clinic in downtown Oakland. And it requires a specific set of commitments that do not cost extra to provide -- they just require caring enough to do them.

📋 Full assessment before treatment

Every new patient at The Shift gets a complete health history, postural evaluation, neurological screening, and spinal palpation before any treatment occurs. This is standard at elite practices. It should be standard everywhere. We do not touch your spine before we understand what it is doing.

🌐 Care in your language

English, Spanish, and Russian. Full care -- history, assessment, consultation, treatment, and documentation -- in the language you think in. Language barriers reduce care quality. We removed them.

🔎 Root cause investigation

We ask why the pattern exists, not just where it hurts. Ergonomics, work demands, stress load, sleep, history of injury. We treat the source, not the symptom. That is the only version of care we are interested in providing.

🤘 Private adjusting rooms

Not an open bay. Not a high-volume assembly line where you can hear the person next to you getting adjusted. One patient at a time. Complete focus. The privacy and attention that any patient deserves, regardless of what they are paying.

📚 Post-graduate training

CCWP, Webster Technique, ICPA two-year pediatric program, Foundation Training, kinesiology background, 200+ PI depositions. The training behind The Shift is not a baseline license. It is years of deliberate post-graduate study on top of it.

🤝 Honest referrals

If chiropractic is not right for your situation, we tell you and we refer you to someone who is. We do not retain patients whose problems require a different provider. The right care matters more than keeping a patient in our chairs.

"Oakland has given us everything. The culture, the community, the patients who push us to be better clinicians because they show up with real lives and real problems and real demands on their bodies. The least we can do is give this city the same quality of care that any patient anywhere would get from the best chiropractor they could find."

-- Dr. Ben Glass, D.C.

Hands for Life Lake Merritt -- The Direct Action Version

The Shift is a private practice, and private practice requires financial sustainability. We accept PI liens for accident patients, work within cash pay structures for everyone else, and run the practice like a business because it has to be one to exist.

But there is a separate piece. Dr. Ben and Dr. Irina co-founded Hands for Life Lake Merritt as a nonprofit chapter specifically to reach the people who cannot access even a reasonable cash-pay practice. The nonprofit provides subsidized chiropractic care to Oakland community members who need it -- the people for whom the fifteen-year life expectancy gap is not an abstraction but a lived reality.

This is the part of the mission that does not make financial sense. It exists because some work is worth doing regardless of whether it is economically rational. Oakland's history of community self-care and mutual aid -- the same tradition that runs through Chinatown's herb shops and the free clinics that have operated in this city for decades -- is the tradition we are trying to contribute to.

Why We Are Downtown, Specifically

435 8th Street. Two blocks from 12th Street Oakland BART. Two blocks from Oakland Chinatown. Walking distance from the courthouse, from Alameda County social services offices, from the hotels and restaurants where service workers spend their shifts. Close enough to Uptown to serve the creative community, close enough to Chinatown to be embedded in the neighborhood's healing tradition, accessible by transit from every corner of the East Bay.

We own our office building. That is not accidental. Ownership means we are not subject to a landlord deciding in five years that the rent needs to triple and this space is better used for something that serves a wealthier clientele. We are in downtown Oakland for the long term, because that is what a community-rooted practice actually means.

The Whole Blog Series -- What We Have Been Building

This is the tenth post in a series that began with Bruce Lee training in Oakland and ends here -- with the clearest statement of why The Shift exists and who it is for. Every post in between has been making the same underlying argument in a different way: that the people of Oakland, in all their diversity and complexity and high-output energy, deserve healthcare that matches them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is The Shift located in downtown Oakland rather than a higher-income area? +

Because this is where we chose to practice, and where we believe our work matters most. Oakland's downtown is accessible by BART from across the East Bay, sits at the intersection of multiple communities we serve -- Chinatown, Uptown, Lake Merritt, the service economy -- and is where we have built our roots. We own our building, so we are not dependent on landlord decisions. We are here for the long term because this community is who we are here for.

Do you accept health insurance? +

We do not accept health insurance directly, but we provide itemized superbills that many PPO plans will reimburse out of network. For auto accident patients, we accept personal injury liens -- meaning zero out-of-pocket while your case is active. We also work with flexible payment arrangements for patients who need them. Our goal is to remove as many access barriers as we reasonably can while running a practice that is financially sustainable enough to stay open.

What is Hands for Life Lake Merritt? +

Hands for Life Lake Merritt is a nonprofit chapter co-founded by Dr. Ben and Dr. Irina that provides subsidized chiropractic care to Oakland community members who cannot access standard care. It operates in the tradition of Oakland's community clinic history and is one direct response to the documented health disparities in the neighborhoods around Lake Merritt. You can learn more at handsforlifelm.org.

How do I get to The Shift without a car? +

We are at 435 8th Street Suite 203, two blocks from 12th Street Oakland BART. From San Francisco, take BART to 12th Street Oakland and walk two blocks south. From across the East Bay, BART to 12th Street Oakland as well. AC Transit serves the area from multiple directions. Street parking is available, and there is a nearby garage on 8th Street for those driving. We are intentionally transit-accessible because we serve the whole East Bay, not just people who drive.

Is The Shift a good fit for someone who has never been to a chiropractor? +

Yes -- and this is a good place to start. We take first-visit assessments seriously. We explain everything we find and everything we recommend before we do anything. We do not use pressure, scare tactics, or pre-sold packages. You come in, we assess what is going on, we discuss it honestly, and you decide whether you want to proceed. If chiropractic is not right for your situation, we tell you that too and point you toward someone who is a better fit. The goal is your health, not our patient count.
