Every practice says it's caring and experienced. Here are the facts you can actually check, and the things we're not the right fit for.
The Shift Chiropractic is a chiropractic clinic in Downtown Oakland, California. It has practiced at 435 8th Street #203 — the corner of 8th and Broadway — since November 2013, and has never moved. Two doctors see patients here: Dr. Ben Glass, D.C. and Dr. Irina Velichko, D.C. Between them, a chiropractor is in the office six days a week.
What follows is deliberately specific. If you're comparing practices, you should be able to verify every line of it.

Two doctors with different training is the practical reason to choose here over a solo practice: you're matched to the one whose background fits what you came in for, rather than to whoever is available.
Five things, and they're all checkable rather than aspirational.
Private rooms, not an open bay where several people are adjusted in sequence within earshot of each other. That format exists and works for some practices. It isn't what was built here, and it's the single most common reason people transfer to us.
A first visit is a full health history, a postural and movement assessment, and a neurological screening — before any adjustment. You are not put on a table before anyone knows what's going on. The full process is written out here.
Care at The Shift includes chiropractic adjustments (manual, on a drop table or with a low-force instrument), soft-tissue and myofascial work, posture correction and rehab exercises, extremity care for the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot, and prenatal and pediatric chiropractic. Before we adjust anything, we ask how you work, sit, sleep and train, because that's usually where the plan for between visits comes from.
Dr. Irina is fluent in Russian and gives the entire visit in Russian. Spanish-language care is available too. Very few Oakland practices can say that about either language, and almost none about both.
The total cost of a recommended plan is shown to you in writing at the report of findings, before you agree to anything. Not a per-visit rate you assemble in your head as you go.
We don't bill insurance directly. That's a real trade-off and worth understanding before you book, so here it is plainly.
| HSA and FSA | Accepted. Chiropractic is an IRS-qualified medical expense, so pre-tax funds apply |
|---|---|
| Superbills | Provided on request for out-of-network reimbursement you submit yourself |
| Employer wellness benefits | Some employers offer wellness benefits that can help cover chiropractic care. Check with your HR team. More on HSA, FSA and employer benefits |
| Payment plans | Available |
| Weekend surcharge | None |
| Prices | As of October 2026, a first visit is $135. It includes the exam, your first adjustment and a follow-up report-of-findings visit; an adjustment at that follow-up visit is billed separately. Visits after that are $60–$80, depending on whether you’re on a care plan or paying per visit. Confirm current prices when you book. The full cost guide |
A page like this is worth more if it tells you when to go elsewhere. So:
One thing we'd rather you did than book with us: read the six questions to ask any chiropractor and ask them wherever you go. If another practice answers them better, go there. If we can't answer them well on your first visit, hold us to it.
A first visit is a full history, examination and consultation. You'll know what's going on and what we recommend before committing to anything. 435 8th Street #203, Downtown Oakland.
